Let's Get This Film Rolling

All throughout being in the Film Studies major, I have been somewhat anxious about taking my senior seminar class. It seems hard to believe in general that I'm even a senior, but now that I am taking my FST 495 class I am so excited to get started on my short film with my crew. After pitching our ideas in class and listening to several of our classmates, it was decided that exploration of the Wiccan religion was going to be our topic. The objective of this film is to alter misconceptions about the Wiccan community and how outsiders perceive them. As someone who has delved into supernatural and paranormal subjects, I have noticed that whenever someone hears of someone who is a wicca, they automatically associate them with witchcraft. All of the people I have personally known who were associated with the religion did not practice any kind of spells. Wiccans can be witches and vice versa, but this is not always the case. Though the religion itself is a form of Paganism, a vast majority of the Wiccan communities that my group has researched in and out of Wilmington actually focus on reconnecting with nature and ridding their bodies of negative energy. It’s actually fascinating to watch some of their rituals/ceremonies on Youtube, as the members are calm and relaxed throughout. I am incredibly excited to see how this film unfolds as the semester progresses. I won’t lie in saying that I am nervous since I have never directed a project of this capacity. But last week my team started hard-core scheduling shooting dates, researching experts for both pitches since we didn’t know last week what our topic was, and scheduling weekly meetings along with days for editing to prevent any deadlines from sneaking up on us. This film is definitely going to be a challenge, but I’m not alone in this process and look forward to seeing how our film and everyone else’s films come together in the end.
